What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals while they are sleeping. They detect their host’s location by sensing the carbon dioxide in their breath. Their saliva contains a mild anesthetic, so you probably won’t even notice when bed bugs are biting you. Their bites typically cause itching, but in the worst cases they may also cause skin infection and severe allergic reaction including anaphylaxis.
Who Can Get Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs can affect anyone. One of New York City’s poshest residential districts experienced a particularly nasty bed bug infestation in 2010, and the number of bed bug infestations in France more than doubled between the years 2018 and 2020. Bed bugs are sneaky insects, adept at hiding and typically transmitted when someone sleeps in an infested bed and then spends the next night in a clean one, but they can also be easily transmitted if you make contact with them in any public space. In short, a bed bug infestation is nothing to be ashamed of – it is only something that needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.

How Do You Know if You Have Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are extremely small at 1/25 to 1/4 inches in length, but they are fortunately easy to detect. People typically realize they have bed bugs when they notice multiple small, red bite marks on their body. These bite marks may take as long as two weeks to manifest themselves, however, and some people do not even experience a physical reaction to bed bug bites. That’s why it’s good to be on the lookout for the other telltale signs of bed bugs:
- Exoskeletons (or husks) that the bed bugs leave behind after molting
- Bed bugs present in the folds of your mattress and its sheets
- Rust-colored blood spots in or around your bed
- A sweet yet unpleasant odor
